About Nippon Hotline

Nippon Hotline publishes English-language reference guides to Japanese travel destinations and regional cuisine, written for readers outside Japan who want more context than a listing site provides.

What we publish

Two sections, currently 35 guides across 23 prefectures :

  • Travel — destination guides covering what a place is, its history, and what to expect on a visit. 17 guides.
  • Food — regional dishes explained from origin and ingredients through to how they are eaten. 18 guides.

Everything is indexed by prefecture, so you can start from a region rather than from a search box.

How our guides are produced

We maintain a curated list of real, verifiable subjects — actual places with a location and a prefecture, actual regional dishes. Nothing is invented to fill a page.

Drafts are produced with the assistance of large language models, then published under a fixed editorial standard. We state this openly because readers are entitled to know how what they are reading was made.

  • No confident guessing. Where a detail could not be established, the guide says Unverified rather than asserting it. Opening hours, seasonal schedules, and access arrangements change often and are the most common things marked this way.
  • No filler superlatives. Phrases like "hidden gem", "must-see", and "breathtaking" are excluded. They carry no information and are the house style of content written to fill space.
  • Specific over generic. Guides are expected to include concrete detail — how something changes by season, how it compares to a similar place or dish — rather than description that would apply equally to anywhere in Japan.
  • Dates on everything. Every guide shows when it was published and when it was last updated, so you can judge how current it is.

Images and attribution

Photographs are sourced from Wikimedia Commons. Where the licence requires it, the author and licence are credited underneath the image, linking back to the original file page. If you hold rights to an image and believe it is used incorrectly, tell us through the inquiry form and we will remove or correct it.

What this site is not

We are not a booking service, and we take no commission on anything described here. We do not accept payment for coverage or for placement within a guide. The site carries third-party display advertising, which has no bearing on what we choose to write about or what we say.

We are not a substitute for official information. For opening hours, ticket prices, transport schedules, and accessibility, check the operator or the local tourist information office before you travel.

Corrections

If a guide contains an error, we want to fix it. Send the page URL and what is wrong through the inquiry form . We correct confirmed errors and update the "last updated" date on the page when we do.
