How this Buddha compares with other large Japanese Buddhas
Tōdai-ji Daibutsu sits in Nara as the principal image (the honzon) of the temple’s Great Buddha Hall. Craftsmen first built a timber armature, wrapped it with brushwood and rope and modelled a clay core. On top of that they built an outer clay mould in sections; the inscription records casting in successive stages (commonly read as eight tiers), which allowed molten metal to be poured from furnaces into the gaps between core and outer mould.
The surviving documentary detail is precise: the Shōsōin archives note the manufacture of 3,350 small metal plates (recorded as 4 sun square and 1 sun thick) used to hold and register the mould sections. The inscription’s phrase commonly read as “three years, eight times” is conventionally interpreted as casting in eight stacked segments, though the actual elapsed time of major casting was just over two years. Finishing work—recasting or patching flaws, attaching spiral hair curls, planing the surface and finally gilding—continued for several years after the public opening.
Raw materials were massive. The total copper used is reported at roughly 500 tonnes, much of it apparently sourced from mines in the west of the archipelago. Gold for gilding came from new finds and recorded gifts; a documented contribution of 900 ryō (about 13 kg) is named in the chronicles. Records also note very large quantities of mercury (given as 58,620 ryō, rendered in the documents as about 820 kg) used in gilding and vermilion processing—contemporary accounts record a significant number of poisoning cases and the setting up of a relief institution for those afflicted.
The opening ceremony and ceremonial material preserved
The 752 opening was a state‑scale religious festival. An Indian monk, Bodhisena, served as the chief officiant for the eye‑opening; the event included large clerical contingents and a programme of Buddhist lectures and musical and dance offerings drawn from Japanese, Chinese and Korean repertories. Lists of participants preserved in documentary rolls confirm the immense scale of attendance.
Objects used at the rite survive among the Shōsōin treasures: a long brush associated with the eye‑painting ritual, a length of specially prepared ink and a ceremonial cord hundreds of metres long are recorded among the items associated with the ceremony, together with masks and other items used in the performing arts presented on the day.
What survives now and the Great Buddha Hall’s form
The present seated bronze measures about 14.7 metres from base to crown; the surrounding pedestal has a perimeter of roughly 70 metres. That bronze is not wholly the original metal of the eighth century: the statue and its hall were damaged by major fires in 1180 and again in 1567 and were repaired or rebuilt multiple times. Surviving elements from the original Nara‑period work include substantial parts of the copper lotus pedestal, sections of the right flank, parts of the arms and the draped sleeves and some thigh regions; these Nara‑period fragments and the lotus‑petal engravings are valued as rare examples of early eighth‑century metalwork and painting source material.
The Great Buddha Hall that houses the image today measures 57.5 metres across the front, 50.5 metres in depth and reaches 49.1 metres to its ridge. Scholars have long debated the textual source for these images; the designs draw on ideas from the Kegon (Avataṃsaka) corpus and other scriptures such as the Brahma Net Sutra and commentarial works. After its completion the Daibutsu and its hall became the focus of successive restorations and reconstructions. The buildings and image were consumed or damaged by major conflagrations in 1180 and again in 1567; each time the statue and temple were re‑established with the support of political patrons.
